This photograph of a tug of war taking place in a field near the village centre was taken on 26th June 1902. The day was to have marked the Coronation of King Edward VII, but he was taken ill with appendicitis and was eventually crowned on 9th August. It wasn't known whether he would survive at the time as it was a serious condition in those days, but it would appear that the village celebrations went ahead regardless. A Union flag can just be seen on the roof of the cottage on the right. Its limpness and the angle of the shadows signify a balmy summer evening. The photograph also shows All Saints Church as it was before 1914, when it was rebuilt at a cost of £1800. The image below it, taken in 2006, shows the scene a century later. |
